Dhiraj Choudhury

Dhiraj Choudhury (1936–2018) was a socially and politically driven artist whose work powerfully reflected India’s struggles with poverty, injustice, and freedom. Born in pre-Partition Bengal, his art was shaped by the trauma of the Bengal famine and the independence movement—fueling a career rooted in activism rather than aesthetics.

His bold, expressive lines and provocative imagery brought human suffering and resilience to the fore, later evolving to explore love as a counterforce to violence. With over 75 solo exhibitions worldwide, Choudhury’s works are part of major public and private collections. A former professor at Delhi College of Art, he remains a vital voice in Indian contemporary art.
