Know about the artwork

This watercolour on paper captures a rickshaw puller in motion, his figure bent forward against the weight of his load. Ananda Das renders the scene with warm ochres and burnt siennas dominating the composition, while cooler blues and greys define the urban backdrop. The loose, fluid brushwork conveys both the physicality of labour and the rhythm of street life.

Das demonstrates confident control of the watercolour medium, allowing pigments to blend naturally while maintaining sharp definition where needed, particularly in the rickshaw's mechanical details and the puller's weathered hands. This 12x16 inch work from recent years shows his skill in balancing precise observation with expressive mark-making. He creates depth through overlapping washes rather than heavy detail.

Original watercolours by contemporary Indian artists documenting everyday life carry particular significance as our urban landscapes transform rapidly. Das's honest portrayal of working-class subjects reflects a tradition of social realism in Indian art while remaining personally observed rather than romanticized. For collectors seeking authentic voices in contemporary Indian art, works like this represent accessible entry points into serious artistic dialogue about labour and dignity.
