Know about the artwork

A rickshaw puller dominates the foreground of this composition, his weathered hands gripping the handles as he navigates what appears to be a busy street scene. Working in watercolour on paper, Das employs an earthy palette of ochres, browns, and muted blues that captures the dust and movement of urban India. The background suggests the blur of city life, buildings, pedestrians, and vehicles rendered in loose, atmospheric washes that contrast with the more defined figure of the rickshawala himself.

Das demonstrates confident control over the watercolour medium, allowing certain areas to bleed and flow while maintaining crisp definition where needed. This medium-sized work reveals his ability to balance spontaneous wet-on-wet techniques with careful observation of light and shadow. The artist's restraint in colour choice strengthens the overall impact, avoiding the temptation to oversaturate what could easily become a chaotic urban scene.

Original watercolours by contemporary Indian artists documenting everyday urban subjects remain highly collectible. Das captures a disappearing aspect of Indian street life with genuine observation rather than romanticisation. For collectors interested in authentic contemporary Indian art, this piece offers both cultural documentation and solid artistic merit at an accessible price point. The watercolour medium ages well when properly cared for, making this a practical addition to any collection.
