Know about the artwork

The narrow street comes alive through careful observation, with a rickshaw puller at rest forming the central focus of this composition. Working in watercolor on paper, Das captures the quiet moment between travels. The figure's posture suggests both weariness and readiness. The palette moves from warm ochres and burnt siennas in the foreground to cooler grays that recede into the urban background, creating natural depth without drama.

Das employs selective detail here. He allows certain areas to dissolve into soft washes while bringing sharp focus to the rickshaw's metal frame and the figure's weathered hands. This medium-sized work demonstrates controlled wet-on-wet technique in the background architecture, contrasted against more precise brushwork in the foreground elements. The artist balances loose, atmospheric passages with moments of crisp definition.

Original works documenting India's street life carry particular weight as our cities transform rapidly. Das belongs to a generation of artists who observed these scenes firsthand. His direct approach, without sentimentality, makes this piece valuable both as art and social document. An authentic watercolor of this subject and execution fits well in contemporary Indian collections focused on urban realism.
