Know about the artwork

A solitary face emerges from the neutral ground of this board work, rendered with deliberate restraint in what appears to be mixed media. Chatterjee constructs the portrait through careful modulation of earth tones and muted flesh colours, allowing the features to materialize gradually from the surface. The composition centres the face within the frame, creating an intimate dialogue between viewer and subject that speaks to quiet contemplation rather than dramatic gesture.

The artist builds form through subtle tonal shifts rather than harsh linear definition. He knows how light models human features. Each plane of the face receives considered attention, from the gentle shadows beneath the brow to the soft transitions around the mouth and jaw. The board surface suits this approach perfectly, allowing Chatterjee to achieve the precise control evident in the work's measured execution.

Original figurative work by established Indian artists forms a solid foundation for any serious collection. Chatterjee's restrained approach to portraiture offers something increasingly rare. Work that rewards extended viewing rather than immediate impact. This piece would anchor a room without overwhelming it, providing the kind of quiet presence that grows more valuable as contemporary art markets continue to recognize thoughtful craftsmanship over spectacle.

Kishore Chatterjee

Kishore Chatterjee (1938–2011) was a Kolkata-based artist, writer, and passionate advocate of Western classical music. A self-taught painter known for his vivid oil works and quirky visual language, his art blended myth, music, literature, and Kolkata street life with eccentric charm. Equally celebrated as a music critic and educator, Chatterjee introduced countless audiences to classical music through lectures, writings, and films. His Ballygunge home, filled with art, books, and Beethoven, mirrored his creative, unconventional spirit. A lifelong outsider to the commercial art world, he remains a beloved figure in Kolkata’s cultural history.
